𠮵 is an old Chinese character glossed as “asking without answering.” In 1977, a second-round Chinese simplification scheme proposed it as a shorter form of 嚷, used for shouting or making noise; the scheme was withdrawn in 1986. Without context, do not assume someone sending 𠮵 means 嚷.

Text symbol

What 𠮵 means

It means “asking without answering.”

In Mandarin, it is pronounced màng. The older sense appears in the Kangxi Dictionary, a Chinese dictionary that cites an earlier work called Pianhai. Much later, a reform reused the same glyph as a shorter form of 嚷, used for shouting, noisy arguing, or making noise. These are separate historical uses.

Why did the reform use 𠮵 for 嚷?

The reform reused it as a shorter form of 嚷.

The simplification kept the 口 (“mouth”) component and replaced the complex right-hand part with 上, producing a six-stroke form.

The State Council later stopped the scheme. As of 2026, the Unicode status list for that second-stage plan marks this form UNUSED.

What does it mean when someone sends 𠮵?

Treat it as context-dependent, not ordinary 嚷.

In a dictionary discussion, read it as the rare character glossed “ask without answering.” In a text following the reform, read it as 嚷: shout, make noise, or reproach. If someone sends it alone, ask which sense they intend; the glyph by itself cannot settle that.

Rare and mostly historical or specialist; outside a reference context, it can look like a typo.

Do not use 𠮵 casually for 嚷; that reform was withdrawn.
