Old form of 蕩

16373/42720

𣿴 is an old form linked to simplified Chinese 荡 and traditional Chinese 蕩; its Mandarin reading is dàng, and one sense is “unrestrained.” 蕩 names a river in 說文解字 (Shuowen Jiezi), a character dictionary compiled in the Eastern Han (100–121 CE), and also means swaying or washing away. Let an old passage’s context choose the sense.

What 𣿴 means

Read it as an old form linked to 蕩/荡; let context decide.

In 說文解字 (Shuowen Jiezi), 蕩 names a river. The water element on the left of 𣿴 fits that link; 𦳝 on the right hints at the sound. 蕩 also has senses of swaying, washing away, and being unrestrained.

Historical form. In modern simplified Chinese, use 荡; in traditional Chinese, use 蕩. Keep 𣿴 when reproducing an older spelling.

1

Why does 𣿴 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Unified Ideographs Extension B block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
