What 𨾦 means

A bird name with related written forms.

The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary completed around 100 CE, defines 𨾦 through 𨿠, a related bird character. It says 𨾦 combines 隹 (“bird”) with 氐 as a sound cue. Its older-style “Zhou-script” (籀文) form 鴟 replaces 隹 with 鳥 (“bird”).

Chinese glosses treat 鴟 as a bird of prey; Japanese dictionaries list tobi (“black kite”) and fukurō (“owl”) as readings of 鴟.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𨾦 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
