Text symbol

What 𪄞 means

It is a written form for a chick or young bird.

The Eastern Han dictionary 《說文解字》 defines 雛 as a young chicken and gives 鶵 as its Zhou-script form, an older writing style. The same character family also covers the young of other birds.

Why do 𪄞 and 鶵 look different?

Their bird and sound parts switch sides.

The Qing dictionary supplement 《字彙補》 (1666) records 𪄞 as equivalent to 鶵. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education treats it as a variant, noting that 𪄞 puts 鳥 (“bird”) on the left and 芻, the sound element, on the right; 鶵 reverses them. The different layout marks a spelling variant, not a different animal.
