What 𪡻 means
It writes cũ, the Vietnamese word for “old.”
Examples include áo cũ (“old clothes”) and bạn cũ (“old friend”).
Why did Vietnamese writers use chữ Nôm?
To write Vietnamese words in a Chinese-derived character system.
Chữ Nôm took shape in Vietnam by the early eleventh century. Writers first borrowed Chinese characters, then combined their parts to record spoken Vietnamese. In the nineteenth century, Emperor Tự Đức compiled a verse dictionary that taught Chinese characters through Nôm explanations.
Several Nôm spellings for cũ are recorded, including 𪡻, 𡳰 and 𡳵.

1Why does 𪡻 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
