What 𫓚 means
Language and subject set the reading. Japanese reads 𫓚 as aotsurugi, “blue sword.” The early character dictionary Shinsen Jikyō records this reading; compiled in 898–901, its oldest surviving copy dates to 1124. 金 means “metal”; 翠 means “green-blue.”
During the Qing dynasty (China’s last imperial dynasty), the chemistry book 化学阐原 used 𫓚 for nickel; it was published in 1882. Translators built compact Chinese names for new scientific terms: 金 marks metal, and 翠 (“green-blue”) points to the color of nickel salts. Today, simplified Chinese writes nickel 镍; traditional Chinese writes 鎳.
