Chinese character 𬳳

𬳳 is a simplified form of 颿, read fān in Mandarin and faan4 in Cantonese's Jyutping romanization. 颿 can mean a horse's swift step or wind driving a boat; Chinese dictionaries also link it with 帆, the familiar character for a sail. A font without 𬳳 may show a box.

What 𬳳 means

Its historical meanings span a horse's speed and sailing. The Han-era dictionary Shuowen glosses 颿 as a horse running quickly. It treats 馬 as the meaning component and 風 as the sound component. Yupian, a Southern Liang dictionary, also records “a boat carried forward by the wind.”

The Qing-era Kangxi dictionary says boat texts once used 颿 and later wrote 帆 separately.
