What 𬷬 means
The Nôm form writes a bird through “home.”
Chữ Nôm is a historical Vietnamese script that repurposes Han characters and combinations to write Vietnamese. In a manuscript copy of Qua Đèo Ngang, 𬷬 is formed from 家 鳥: 家 cues gia (“home/family”), while 鳥 means “bird.”
The wordplay reading sets quốc (“country”) against gia (“home”) through two bird calls. Phạm Quỳnh’s 1917 transcription prints gia gia; An Chi’s 2009 etymological essay argues that the second bird is instead đa đa. The poem’s reading remains disputed.
How is 𬷬 read in Japanese?
A Japanese character index gives it the reading にわとり, “chicken.” The reading is indexed for this exact ideograph; it does not settle the Vietnamese poem’s disputed bird name.
Literary in Vietnamese poetry; its reading depends on the language and text tradition.
In Qua Đèo Ngang, treat “gia gia” and “đa đa” as disputed readings.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𬷬 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
