Rare Han character

5919/7473

𮗎 is a rare Chinese character, or Han character, documented in Buddhist reference works and the Taishō canon, an edited collection of Buddhist scriptures. A dictionary preserves a pronunciation, but the original passage is still needed to understand the character’s role.

What 𮗎 means

The dictionary gives a reading, not a clear definition.

Longkan Shoujian (龍龕手鑑), a Buddhist character dictionary completed in 997, was made to help readers of scriptures. It files 𮗎 under 見 (“see”), the traditional lookup element, and records 俗音回, a sound cue using 回.

Why does 𮗎 appear in Unicode?

It came through a project digitizing Buddhist scripture.

The University of Tokyo’s SAT project submitted it in 2017 so digital Taishō texts could store and search rare characters as text rather than pictures.
