What 見 means
It means “see”; the surrounding word can add “meet” or another sense.
Mandarin pinyin (its spelling in Latin letters) writes one reading as jiàn, used for seeing or meeting. In Japanese, 見 is a kanji (a written character) in 見る, read miru, “to see or watch”; the ending る completes the verb.
An ancestor of 見 appears in Shang oracle-bone inscriptions—writing carved on animal bones and turtle shells—as a person with an emphasized eye, representing seeing. Its written form changed through later inscriptions.
What does 見 mean in Chinese and Japanese?
The language and surrounding characters determine its reading and meaning.
Mandarin compounds show the range: 看見 means “see” or “spot,” 見面 means “meet face to face,” and 再見 means “goodbye,” literally “see again.” Classical Chinese also uses 見, read xiàn there, for “appear” or “reveal”; that reading does not fit every compound.
In Japanese, 見る means “see or watch,” 見える means “be visible,” and 見せる means “show.” The endings change the verb, so translate each whole form rather than 見 on its own.
A lone 見 needs more context
If someone sends only 見, do not treat it as proof they have seen your message. On its own, it can be a fragment or a word meaning “see”; ask for the whole word or read the surrounding sentence.
Its tone comes from the phrase: 見 appears in farewells, verbs, and classical writing.
A lone 見 does not confirm “message seen.”

1Why does 見 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
