What 視 means
視 links seeing with attention, inspection, or judgment. In Mandarin Chinese, it is pronounced shì with the fourth, falling tone; shi4 marks that same tone with a number. Words such as 注視 (watch closely), 視察 (inspect), 重視 (treat as important), and 無視 (ignore) show how much the surrounding word matters.
Chinese dictionaries also record senses such as treating, governing, showing, comparing, and following a model. Japanese uses 視 in compounds about close attention or regarding one thing as another.
A 1999 study of ancient writing proposes that a sign carved on oracle bones in the late Shang dynasty—an ancient Chinese ruling house—was an early form of 視, distinct from 見. It interprets those bone inscriptions as checking regions or armies, and inscriptions on Western Zhou bronzes as records of formal visits between states. These are interpretations of early written uses, not proof of one original purpose.
Read the whole word before inferring an attitude
The surrounding word, not 視 alone, sets the reading. 重視 means treating something as important, while 無視 means disregarding it. A lone 視 does not by itself show the sender’s attitude.
Why does 視 look different?
Regional fonts may draw the same Han character with small differences.
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean font conventions can change component shapes while the encoded character stays the same. A change from 視 to 视 is different: 视 is the simplified Chinese counterpart, not just another font drawing.

1Why does 視 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
