What 𮪹 means
It is a rare written form of 敞, meaning open or spacious. The familiar form appears in 敞开 (“open wide”) and 宽敞 (“spacious”), so it is easier to recognize in ordinary Chinese writing.
Why was 𮪹 preserved?
To preserve a source form in digital Buddhist texts. The SAT project submitted it for its digital edition of the Taishō Buddhist canon, a printed collection of Buddhist scriptures; Unicode 10.0 (2017) records that encoding. The date marks the digital record, not the glyph’s historical beginning.
Keep it for source-faithful transcription; use 敞 in ordinary Chinese prose.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𮪹 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
