Bustard character

7293/7473

𮬬 is an old Chinese character for a bustard, a large ground bird; 鸨 (traditional 鴇) is the usual modern form. In the Shijing poem 鸨羽, traditional commentary reads bustards gathered in trees as an image of people taken for forced service and kept from their parents. By itself, 𮬬 names the bird; the later brothel-keeper sense belongs to 老鸨, whose history is disputed.

What 𮬬 means

It is an old Chinese character for a bustard.

In classical Chinese, it names the bird; 鸨 (traditional 鴇) is the usual modern form of the same word. Older glosses describe a goose-like bird without a hind toe and with leopard-like plumage; one nickname, 独豹, means “solitary leopard.”

The Shijing, an early Chinese poetry collection, includes the poem 鸨羽. Traditional commentary reads the bustards gathered in trees as an image of people taken for forced service and kept from caring for their parents. The Ming-era Sancai Tuhui, an illustrated encyclopedia, also prints 𮬬 in its bird entry. In Yuan–Ming vernacular drama—plays written closer to everyday speech—the compound 老鸨 came to mean a brothel keeper. Explanations of that transfer differ, so the later sense does not belong to 𮬬 alone.

Why can 𮬬 look like a box?

Your font may not contain this character.

Because 𮬬 is in a supplementary Han-character range, fonts without coverage may show a missing-character box; supported fonts can draw its strokes differently. A box points to font support, not a different meaning. Unicode reference shapes are examples, not mandatory designs.

When should I use this older form?

Use it for historical spellings or classical Chinese.

For new Chinese writing aimed at general readers, 鸨 is clearer. Keep 𮬬 when quoting an edition that prints it or when discussing the old graph itself. If someone sends it alone, ask for the surrounding sentence: the glyph identifies the bird word, but not which historical passage or later wordplay they intend.

Classical or specialist; for ordinary modern Chinese prose, 鸨 (traditional 鴇) is clearer.

Do not read the compound’s brothel-keeper sense into 𮬬 alone.
