What means
The word and language around it decide its use.
is a written variant with different jobs in Chinese medical and chemical writing and Korean Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean writing). In traditional Chinese medicine it appears in a disease term as a variant of 脱/脫. In chemistry and modern medicine it appears in terms written today with 酰, including amide and ureide, two groups of nitrogen-containing compounds. A Korean Hanja use reads it 세.
Read the full compound and identify the language before assigning a meaning; the glyph by itself does not settle the reading.
Its written uses come from separate traditions
The Siku Quanshu, a large Chinese imperial book collection, preserves 血 in 景岳全書, a medical compendium by Zhang Jiebin. The work was completed in 1624; that dates the book, while the exact spelling is documented in its Siku copy. A 1997 dictionary of traditional Chinese medicine gives the corresponding term as 脱血; the Siku copy also has 虚 where other editions use 虚脱.
Chinese chemistry and medicine articles from 1960–1993 use it in terms now written with 酰, including 胺 / 酰胺 (amide) and 脲 / 酰脲 (ureide). A Korean Hanja source shows an extra in 洗腆; it is read 세 there, and the base expression means obtaining clean, plentiful food and drink.
Its digital source has a separate purpose. A 2023 draft amendment to GB 18030, China’s national text-encoding standard, places among supplementary characters for public-security population records, intended to let uncommon characters in personal and place names travel between information systems. That administrative purpose is separate from its older and technical word uses.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 15.1 (2023), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
