China's 2023 update to GB 18030, its national Chinese-character coding standard, added a special set for public-security population information. A report to the international group that coordinates Han-character encoding says the additions met a need for citizen real-name certification. Rare personal names and place names can require forms that systems need to preserve exactly.

It may be a font or browser fallback issue. A Firefox bug reported in 2023 showed CJK Extension I characters as boxes even with a font installed; Mozilla fixed it in Firefox 115.5 ESR, 120, and 121.
