畏 appears on Shang oracle bones, records used in divination, and later on bronze inscriptions from China's Western Zhou period. Its early form may show a ghost holding a stick, likely a picture of fear. The Han-era dictionary Shuowen Jiezi instead describes a ghost's head with tiger claws.
