What 𰤐 means
It is a written variant of 登.
Mandarin reads 登 as dēng; Japanese reads 登る as noboru. Those readings differ by language.
How did 登 get its meaning?
Early forms have two explanations.
Shang-era oracle-bone inscriptions (writing carved on animal bones or turtle shells) and Western Zhou bronze inscriptions show early forms of 登.
The Han-era Shuowen Jiezi dictionary explains 登 as getting onto a vehicle. A 2017 interpretation instead sees hands presenting food in a vessel as an offering; it treats the vessel as a clue to the word’s sound and the top as a sign of upward motion.
