What 㺑 means
It is a rare historical Chinese character with old dog-related senses.
An early definition in the Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi describes a dog thrusting its head through a narrow gap; the same entry also records cruel injury. The left 犭 is the shortened form of 犬 (“dog”), and 參 is the part used to hint at the sound.
Later rhyme dictionaries use 㺑㺝 and 㺝㺑 for a dog's bark or bark-like sound; other entries apply it to a dog's biting appearance or hair. In 山㺑, the character names a small, humanlike mountain creature in Shenyi jing, a classical book of marvels.
How did 㺑's meaning change?
Its surviving record moves from dog actions to sounds, traits, and folklore.
The Song-era rhyme dictionary Guangyun preserves the barking expressions; later dictionaries associated with the Kangxi era collect other readings.
Two handwritten Dunhuang texts, P.3906 and S.619, record 㺝㺑; later sources give related spellings such as 繿縿 and 䰐縿. These are historically linked spellings, not interchangeable characters just because they look or sound similar.
What does 㺑 mean in a message?
Ask for context; it has no settled chat meaning.
If it appears in a quotation, dictionary entry, or transcription of a classical text, read it through that source. Sent alone in casual chat, it does not reliably signal anger, barking, cruelty, or a monster; the old definitions are not a dependable mood code.
For old dictionaries and text history: rare, archaic, and tied to its source.
Alone, 㺑 is no reliable signal of anger, barking, or a monster.

3Questions people ask
1Why is 㺑 a blank box?
A missing glyph in the active font. 㺑 is drawn using a text font for Chinese, Japanese, or Korean; if that font lacks its outline, it may show a square or fallback glyph. A font that includes this character can display it.
