䟏

5072/6592

䟏 is a classical Chinese character for movement, with dictionary senses such as moving, walking, and treading. Its Mandarin reading is lì, roughly “lee” with a falling pitch, written as the fourth tone in pinyin. Its written analysis pairs 走, the motion component, with 樂 as a sound cue; old quotations preserve the character.

What 䟏 means

It means “to move”; the passage tells you which kind.

The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, explains 䟏 as 動也 (“to move”). It analyzes the form as 走, which signals movement, plus 樂, which supplies the sound. Later dictionaries also gloss it as “to walk” or “to tread,” so context decides the closest English verb.

The Shuowen Jiezi quotes 輔䟏 in a passage associated with the Spring and Autumn tradition. The later Kangxi Dictionary cites 多庶䟏䟏 from the Stone Drums, a group of inscribed stones linked to hunting poems. As of 2026, proposed dates for the Stone Drums range from Western Zhou through Spring and Autumn/Warring States, Qin, and later periods.

Is 䟏 the same as 躒?

躒 is recorded as a variant form of 䟏.

Yupian, an early Chinese character dictionary, and later dictionaries connect 躒 with 䟏 as a variant. The Kangxi Dictionary also uses 轢 as a historical gloss for the motion word. 轢 has its own senses, including rolling over and crushing, so that gloss does not make it a spelling you can swap into ordinary text. Keep the glyph used by the source you are reading.

How do I type 䟏?

A Mandarin IME, Wubi, and Cangjie are listed input routes.

In a Mandarin pinyin IME, enter li and select the candidate for lì (ㄌㄧˋ), if it is offered.

The glyph's outline can vary by font. If it appears as a box, that font lacks it; switch to a font that supports the character before treating it as a different character.

The register is classical and dictionary-like; in ordinary modern prose it reads as deliberately archaic.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 䟏 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
