Chinese character 䫏

5840/6592

䫏 is an archaic Chinese word for “ugly”; in 䫏頭, it belongs to the name of a ritual mask or masked figure. If it arrives alone, the intent is unclear: it may be a pointed insult or a reference to that older ritual vocabulary.

What 䫏 means

Alone, it is an old, negative word for “ugly.”

An early Chinese character dictionary, 《說文解字》, compiled in the Eastern Han around 100–121 CE, glosses 䫏 as “ugly” and records 䫏頭 in a passage about driving off epidemic spirits.

䫏頭 names a ritual mask or masked figure in spirit-driving rites associated with 方相氏, a ritual official. A 2008 heritage entry describes Qimen Nuo, a Chinese masked rite, as a way to drive away disease and seek safety; it also notes later performances with ancestor rites, harvest prayers, and folk stories. The alternate spelling 魌頭 uses 魌.

What does 䫏 mean when someone sends it?

A bare 䫏 message does not settle its meaning.

Aimed at someone's appearance, its dictionary sense can insult; in a quotation or discussion of 䫏頭, it may name the mask instead. Ask for context before replying.

Archaic and literary; aimed at someone's appearance, it can sound insulting.

Do not aim it at someone unless the historical reference is clear.
