What 䫡 means
It describes an elongated or narrow face. The earliest recorded dictionary entry is in Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese dictionary compiled in 100 CE and presented to the court in 121 CE. Later dictionaries also gloss it through the cheeks or jaw; a repeated expression adds an unattractive sense.
In 《新方言》, a study of Chinese word forms, Zhang Binglin links 䫡 to 顩, a character borrowed to write a long, narrow face with a pointed chin. The account traces the sense toward the broader meaning “face” and contrasts 䫡 with 脸, described as the common form for that general meaning.
It has a learned, historical register; using it in place of 脸 makes the writing feel literary.
