What 䮿 means
A rare form of 蹇 for a lame horse or donkey.
The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen glosses 蹇 as “lame.” The later dictionary Zhengzitong records 䮿 as a nonstandard form; other dictionaries list 䮿驢 for a lame donkey.
䮿 adds 馬, the character for “horse,” to 蹇 and points toward the animal reading. In classical Chinese, 蹇 also means difficulty or obstruction.
Should you use 䮿 in a message?
Prefer 蹇 when readers need an immediately recognizable form.
Use 䮿 when preserving its historical spelling or explaining its animal sense. Sent without context, it may look like an obscure dictionary form or a font problem; ask what the sender intended if the meaning matters.
Why does 䮿 show as a box?
The character exists; your current font may not contain its glyph.
Without a glyph, software may show an empty box, a blank space, or a fallback character. A font that includes 䮿 can display it; the underlying character stays the same.
Archaic and specialized; 䮿 may look like a dictionary form, typo, or missing glyph.
For everyday readability, use 蹇.

Questions people ask
1Why does 䮿 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Unified Ideographs Extension A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
