What 蹇 means
It covers literal lameness and figurative difficulty. In plain terms, it describes walking with difficulty or a life, task, or conversation that does not go smoothly.
命蹇 and 蹇運 describe a troubled fate or fortune; 蹇澀 and 蹇滯 describe halting speech, writing, or affairs. In the Zhouyi, the Book of Changes, 蹇 names a hexagram.
What is 蹇's origin and history?
It began as a word about impaired walking. 說文解字, an early Chinese character dictionary, analyzes 蹇 as the foot element 足 plus a shortened sound component from 寒, and glosses it as lameness. The physical sense broadened to hardship, unlucky fortune, and difficulty speaking or making progress.
A Chu-bamboo copy of the Zhouyi, written in the Warring States period, preserves 蹇 in the hexagram text. That is an early documented setting, not proof that the character began there.
The wording changed across surviving bamboo, silk, and later transmitted versions: some lines shift from private hardship toward royal or public sacrifice, and outcomes range from tragic to more hopeful. A traditional sound series also links 蹇 to 謇, 搴, 騫, and 褰; the connection does not make their meanings interchangeable.
What does 蹇 mean in a message?
Read it as literary or name-like unless context points elsewhere. A classical passage may use the lameness or hardship sense; a Zhouyi discussion points to the hexagram.
For a person's name, keep the reading and naming context in view. If 蹇 arrives alone, the surrounding sentence matters.
Using it casually sounds learned or deliberately archaic. It can make a simple word for “difficult” feel like a literary allusion.
Literary and name-like; it suits classical quotations and learned allusions better than casual chat.
Do not reduce it to “bad luck”; a hexagram, name, or literary phrase may be intended.

1Why does 蹇 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
