What 䯉 means
It describes a throat blockage that makes breathing difficult.
The earliest recorded explanation is in the Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE. It describes breath obstructed in the throat and analyzes 䯉 as 欠, a breath-related component, plus 骨, used for sound.
Japanese dictionaries also retain the throat-obstruction sense and list several on-readings—the Sino-Japanese readings used in compounds. If 䯉 arrives alone, start with the literal bodily meaning; surrounding words can clarify whether choking, gagging, or difficult breathing is meant.
Which input methods accept 䯉?
Try its Mandarin readings or shape-based keyboard codes.
Pinyin, the spelling system for Mandarin, lists wā (roughly “wah,” high and level) and yà (“yah,” falling). Chinese Wubi uses the shape code MEQW; Cangjie, another shape-based input method, uses BBNO.
Dictionary-like and literal: its documented meaning describes a physical sensation.
