What 两 means
Use 两 for quantities; 二 for the numeral and ordinals.
两个人 means two people; 两天 means two days. Use 二 in 二月 (February), 第二 (second), 二十二 (twenty-two), and inside longer numbers. Either form can occur before 百, 千, or 万.
Where did 两 come from?
Its written history runs from 㒳 through 兩 to 两.
An early 㒳 appears in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions, including a count of paired horses. Older uses of 兩 include “two,” “both,” and “a pair.” The early dictionary Shuowen Jiezi describes 兩 as a 24-zhu weight (zhu was an old weight unit) and explains its form through division of 㒳; this account does not prove the original design.
