What 丼 means
It names a serving bowl and the dish served inside it. The Japanese word donburi was recorded for serving bowls by the late 17th century, including bowls used for foods such as soba, Japanese buckwheat noodles. The Japanese text Mimi Bukuro, dated 1784–1814, gives a food use. Chinese lexicons also record a well-related sense and a sound for an object dropping into a well; how that older history led to the Japanese bowl word is uncertain.
Food use is neutral; the money-related idiom is critical.
In money talk, it means slapdash bookkeeping.
