CJK Unified Ideograph-4E47

72/20992

乇 is a rare hanzi and kanji with old senses tied to a leaf and to entrusting; in older Chinese it also stood for torr. Online it plays visual dress-up as the E-like opener of the stylized EXTRA THICC string, not Japanese. Shape does the joke; pronunciation is not E.

Text symbol

What 乇 means

It has historical Chinese senses, not one modern translation.

The defensible trail starts with the Han-era Shuowen tradition: 乇 glossed as a plant leaf, a stalk crossing the ground with a root below. Charts consulted do not establish a continuous oracle-bone, bronze, or Warring States line. As of 2026-09-08, the checked sources do not establish a separate ritual purpose, so call it an uncertain plant pictograph.

Later records connect 乇 with 托 and 託, entrusting, relying, or supporting. It was also the older written rendering of torr, the pressure unit; the 1977 terminology notice chose 托 and listed 乇 for replacement. Japanese references treat it as an uncommon outside-standard kanji.

Why is 乇 in extra thicc text?

It plays Latin E by shape, not language.

A late-2010s meme and copypasta habit puts 乇 at the front of the stylized EXTRA THICC string. The string shops for Latin-like silhouettes across Unicode; it is not Japanese spelling, and 乇 is not the Japanese letter E. In that lineup the small three-stroked hanzi gets to be the glamorous E.

When 乇 arrives alone, do not auto-translate it as E, leaf, or entrust. Check the neighborhood: historical use needs a Chinese phrase around it, meme use needs the rest of the stylized string. That pause keeps a visual joke from reading as classical Chinese.

Which characters are related to 乇?

托 and 託 are the useful modern relatives.

乇 shows up as a phonetic component in 托, 託, 宅, 侘, and 吒. That is a sound-series link, not a shared definition: 托 and 託 are the ones for support or entrusting. Save the lookalike spelling for the joke; in normal modern writing use the standard form.

Rare Han character; in English meme spaces it signals decorative Unicode play.

In the meme string read 乇 as visual E; alone, ask for context.

1

Is 乇 the Japanese E?

No. In the meme string it is borrowed for an E-like silhouette; Japanese readers do not read it as Latin E.
