义

Chinese character yi

义 is the simplified form of 義 and can mean rightness, duty, loyalty, or meaning; the full word tells you which. In Mandarin, its vowel sounds roughly like “ee,” with a falling tone; Pinyin, the Latin-letter spelling system, writes it yì or yi4. 正义 means justice, 意义 significance, and 义气 loyalty toward friends. Sent alone, it does not tell you enough to assume “justice” or a judgment.

What 义 means

Its meaning depends on the word around it. In Mandarin, 义 appears in compounds with distinct meanings: 正义 means justice or moral rightness, 意义 means meaning or significance, and 义务 means duty or obligation. 义气 refers to loyalty toward friends. Translating every instance as “righteousness” can distort the sentence.

Older forms of 義 appear in inscriptions from China's Shang and Zhou eras, including inscriptions on oracle bones—animal bones used for divination—and bronze objects; they do not match today's simplified outline. An early dictionary gloss connects 義 with 威儀, dignified bearing in ritual; another proposed reading sees a weapon beside a sacrificial sheep in the old form. These are debated explanations, not settled accounts of the origin. Confucian writing, a Chinese ethical tradition, treats 义 as an ideal alongside 仁 (benevolence), 礼 (ritual propriety), 智 (wisdom), and 信 (trustworthiness).

How should I read 义 in a message?

Ask for the surrounding word if they sent only 义. A lone character does not tell you whether the sender means moral rightness, duty, loyalty, or meaning. Ask what phrase it belongs to before reading it as praise, criticism, or a judgment.

In 义气, 义 points toward loyalty and moral courage toward friends; this is more relational than 正义, which means justice. Translate the whole word's relationship rather than assigning 义 one English gloss.

Why is 义 different from 義?

义 is used in simplified Chinese; 義 in traditional Chinese. They are simplified and traditional forms of the same written character, not different translations. Match the script of the surrounding Chinese text. Mixing forms within a word can look inconsistent.

The tone changes with the compound: 意义 can be neutral, 正义 moral, and 义气 relational.

An isolated 义 is too little evidence for a personal moral judgment.
