Birth, production, or property — the surrounding word decides.

The older full form 產 already appears on bronze vessels — lettering cast on ritual bronzes, among the oldest surviving Chinese writing. 生 ('to be born, to grow') gives the meaning, a shortened 彥 the sound. From birth the sense widened to producing, then to products and property. Simplified Chinese writes 产, Traditional 產, Japanese 産.
