What 產 means
Birth, production, products, or property, depending on the compound. Read the whole Chinese word: 產子 refers to giving birth, 生產 to production, 產品 to a product, and 財產 to property or assets.
Early forms appear in bronze inscriptions from the late Spring and Autumn and early Warring States periods, associated with birth or origin. Traditional character analysis treats 生, a character linked to birth and life, as the meaning part, and a shortened 彥 as the sound part.
Why do 產, 产, and 産 differ?
They are related forms used in different written traditions. 产 is the simplified Chinese counterpart; 産 is an established form used in Japanese. These are distinct encoded characters, so preserve the exact form in a name or quotation.
Writing 產 rather than 产 points to traditional Chinese script, but it does not by itself identify what language its writer speaks.
Does 產 mean the same as 生 in Japanese?
One Japanese convention assigns them different sides of birth. A usage note published before 2008 assigns 産 to giving birth and 生 to the person born; it describes this as a convention, not an explanation of the characters’ origins.

1Why does 產 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
