Gugyeol Character 亪

171/20992

亪 is a Korean gugyeol mark, a note that helps readers read older Chinese texts in Korean; it works as a reading cue rather than a standalone word with one translation. Korean references record several readings for it. If someone sends it alone, ask for its source line before deciding how to read it.

What 亪 means

It is a Korean reading mark, not a one-word translation. Gugyeol is a way of adding Korean grammar and reading cues to Classical Chinese, the older written form used in historical texts.

References list Korean readings written in Hangul, the Korean alphabet: 란, 난, and 역. The surrounding annotation shows which reading the source intends.

How was 亪 used in Korean gugyeol?

One witness to the practice is a manuscript from the Korean kingdom of Silla, dated to the 8th century: a Buddhist Huayan Sutra marked with a stylus.

After Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was introduced in the 15th century, it took over much of gugyeol's annotation work. The related Korean practices idu and hyangchal mainly used Chinese characters to write Korean; gugyeol instead marked Chinese text for Korean reading. Handwritten and scholarly gugyeol continued.

What should I do if someone sends 亪?

Ask for its source before translating it. By itself, 亪 does not show which recorded Korean reading is meant; the surrounding line or annotation supplies that context.

Historical and specialist: it points to a Korean annotation tradition, and an isolated use needs its source.

Its reading depends on the annotation context; do not assign one from its shape.

Questions people ask

2

Why is 亪 missing from my font?

Your selected font may lack the glyph. A listed default system-font path includes it for Windows 10 and later; if it remains blank, choose a font that covers Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters.

Can 亪 be translated as a modern Chinese word?

Not safely from the character alone. Its documented Korean use is as a reading mark, and its listed readings differ; use the source line to decide whether a modern Chinese translation fits.
