What 亿 means
亿 marks one hundred million.
Chinese large numbers count in four-digit steps: 万 is ten thousand, and 亿 is 10,000 万. So 一亿 is 100,000,000; 十亿 is 1,000,000,000. In 一亿五千万, 五千万 adds 50 million to reach 150 million.
Why is 億 different from 亿?
億 is the traditional counterpart of simplified 亿.
Use 亿 in simplified Chinese and 億 in traditional Chinese. They are separate characters, not font drawings of one character.
The early Chinese character dictionary 《說文解字》 records an older sense of 億 as “to make secure” and says the character was borrowed for number use. Historical dictionaries preserve older number scales too, so an old passage does not automatically mean 100 million.

1Is 一个亿 a meme?
Sometimes. A 2016 joke riffed on businessman Wang Jianlin’s phrase 先挣它一个亿 (“first earn 100 million”), treating that target as a supposedly modest “small goal.” Without that reference, 一个亿 simply states the amount.
