What 佀 means
It means “resemble” or “be like.”
佀 is a historical variant of the standard Chinese character 似 and has the same meaning. In ordinary modern Chinese writing, 似 is the standard form.
An inscription on the back of the Liu Xiong stone monument, from the Han period, records 佀. Classical commentaries also use 似 as a borrowed written form for 嗣 (“continue”) and 巳; those are separate historical uses of 似, not meanings of 佀.
佀 signals a historical variant spelling; 似 is standard in ordinary modern Chinese.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
