What 佁 means
The earliest secure gloss is “foolish-looking.” The Eastern Han Shuowen Jiezi, a character dictionary, analyzes 佁 as 亻 plus 台 for sound. A graph on a bronze vessel from the late Spring and Autumn period has been read as 佁, but that reading is disputed.
In the Han-era compound 佁儗, it means held back or hesitant. In Liu Zongyuan’s Tang essay, 佁然 describes fish shadows still on the streambed.
Literary and dictionary-like; alone, it looks like a quote fragment.
Alone, it is too ambiguous for a confident reaction.

Questions people ask
1Why does 佁 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
