What 低 means
低 means “low”; the surrounding words tell you what is low. In Chinese, 低声 means a low voice, while 低头 means lowering your head. Read the whole expression rather than translating each character separately.
Classical Chinese examples include bowed heads and low positions; modern usage also covers prices, ranks, moods, and volume. Traditional character analysis combines 亻, a component representing a person, with 氐, which supplies a sound clue. In Japanese, 低 appears in words such as 低い, with Japanese readings rather than Mandarin dī.
When is 低 negative?
It becomes negative when “low” judges worth, taste, or ability. 低价 describes a low price; 低级 and 低俗 can dismiss something as inferior or vulgar. 低调, by contrast, can approve of someone's understated manner.
A bare 低 after a score or price probably refers to that figure. Without a clear target, ask what is low before taking it personally.
低 is ordinary vocabulary: a low level and a put-down are different uses.
Calling someone's work 低级 can insult them. If you mean a low measurement, specify what you measured.

1Why does 低 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
