What 底 means
底 means the bottom or underlying base.
The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi (around 100 CE) glosses 底 as “mountain dwelling” and “below.” That is an early written record, not an invention date. Traditional analysis links 广 to meaning and 氐 to sound.
How is 底 read?
The reading depends on the language and word.
Mandarin dǐ sounds roughly like “dee,” with the voice dipping then rising. Japanese uses soko (“soh-koh”) for “bottom” and tei (“tay”) in compounds. Korean uses jeo (“juh”) in Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), including 海底 (“seabed”) and 基底 (“base”).

1Questions people ask
1Why does 底 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
