What 侥 means
It signals luck you did not earn. In 侥幸, pronounced jiao-xing in Mandarin, the result is unearned or narrowly avoided: a pass, an escape, a win you cannot count on repeating. 侥幸心理 names the mindset of banking on that luck again.
The Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary, records 僥 in 焦僥, a name for a short southern people. Later lexicons add a seek-or-hope sense and link 侥 with near-sounding 徼. Modern simplified Chinese writes the luck sense as 侥; traditional text keeps 僥.
Treat 侥 as context-dependent written Chinese; 侥幸 is the clearest modern reading.
In traditional Chinese text, write 僥, not the simplified 侥.

1Why does 侥 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
