What 势 means
It can mean power, influence, momentum, situation, or trend.
The full compound decides which sense fits.
埶 appears on Western Zhou bronzes, an early Chinese dynasty. One inscription is read as 埶 for 設 (“set up”), though the line has competing readings. Texts before the Qin dynasty used 埶 or 勢 for power and strategic circumstances. By the Song and Yuan dynasties, 势 was an informal form of 勢; it later became the standard simplified Chinese form. Traditional Chinese and Japanese use 勢.
Neutral alone; the compound sets the tone.
Not every use means “power.”

1Why does 势 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
