What 匾 means
It means a written plaque mounted on a building. In Chinese architecture it names or honors a hall, temple, garden, shop, or residence, and its wording carries a motto, blessing, or statement of purpose. If someone sends you 匾 by itself, read it as an object or inscription, not a reaction.
The history is older than the modern form. In the Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, 扁 is defined as marking a doorway; 匾 itself is not recorded there. Later evidence connects plaque practice to Qin-Han official and palace doorways, then to temples, homes, and shops; it flourished in the Ming-Qing plaque-and-couplet tradition.
匾 vs 扁: which one?
Not exactly; 匾 is the plaque-specific form. The two share the plaque sense in historical and variant writing, but 扁 also means flat and appears in unrelated everyday words. Use 匾 for the inscribed board; expect 扁 in older quotations or when the meaning is flatness.
Formal and cultural: it belongs to architecture, calligraphy, heritage, and ceremonial writing.
Do not use it for “flat”; that everyday sense belongs to 扁.

1Why does 匾 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
