What 卞 means
It can be a surname or a classical word. In Mandarin, the surname 卞 is pronounced roughly “byen” with a falling tone; its standard Pinyin spelling is Biàn. Classical dictionaries also give 卞 meanings such as law or a hasty, impatient state, and record a place in Lu and a term for bare-handed combat.
A traditional account in the Guangyun, a medieval Chinese pronunciation dictionary, traces the surname to a fief named Bian: territory granted to a local lord.
As of 2024, Taiwan's Ministry of Education variant dictionary notes that 卞 is not recorded in Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary. Han Dian's glyph history includes forms in Chu manuscripts, from an ancient Chinese state, and later clerical script, an early formal writing style. These examples show the written form across periods but do not establish which meaning came first.
卞 vs 弁
They are distinct characters with some historical overlap. 弁 also names an ancient cap and the headwear worn in a man's coming-of-age rite. The outline alone cannot tell you which character a name or text uses.
Most at home in names and literary or classical language; a lone 卞 needs context.
Do not read someone's surname as “impatient.”

1Why does 卞 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
