What 弁 means
The Japanese compound tells you which meaning applies. 弁別 means distinguishing or telling things apart, while 弁償 means compensating for a loss. 花弁 names a petal, 安全弁 a safety valve, 弁解 an explanation or excuse, and 関西弁 a regional way of speaking.
Modern Japanese also writes three older characters as 弁: 辨 for distinguishing or deciding, 瓣 for petals and some valve terms, and 辯 for speech. Japan's 1946 当用漢字表 listed characters for everyday use; the 1949 当用漢字字体表 set standard printed forms. The reform brought these older lines together in writing, not in meaning.
A historical Chinese form of 弁 has a separate headwear story. Oracle-bone writing—Chinese inscriptions carved on bones or turtle shells—shows a crown-like form, while bronze inscriptions show hands supporting a crown. Historical references connect this line with 冕 and 冠, characters for ceremonial headwear and a cap or crown.
If someone sent only 弁, what should you do?
Ask for the surrounding word or sentence.
A lone 弁 cannot tell you whether the writer means a cap, speech, a petal, a valve, or a distinction. The neighboring characters and language determine which line applies.
Without its Japanese compound, 弁 leaves several meanings open.
Do not assume a bare 弁 means “valve” or “argument”; the surrounding word decides.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 弁 look different in Chinese and Japanese fonts?
Regional fonts can draw the same Han character differently. A different outline does not by itself make it a different character.
