What 辨 means
It means to distinguish, recognize, or tell things apart.
In modern Mandarin, it normally appears inside compounds: 分辨 means distinguish, 辨认 means recognize, 辨别 means differentiate, and 辨识 means identify.
Its written history reaches back to a Western Zhou bronze-script form, around 1000 BCE. An early analysis uses 刀, the Chinese character for “knife,” to suggest cutting apart, while 辡 supplies the sound. Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, around 100 CE glossed 辨 with 判, “judge or decide.” The Unicode record is an encoding milestone, not this character’s origin.
Why do 辨, 辯, 辩, and 弁 get mixed up?
They overlap historically, but modern writing gives them different jobs.
辨 is the “distinguish or recognize” character. In traditional Chinese writing, 辯 means argue or debate; simplified Chinese writes it as 辩. In Japanese, 弁 is used as a simplified form for three historically different characters: 辨, 辯, and 瓣, meaning “petal.” One modern Japanese form can therefore hide which character a Chinese-language source would use.
Classical sources also record 辨 for arguing or disputing, and historical dictionaries connect the forms through shared sound and older legal language. Use the whole word as your guide: a bare glyph does not preserve every historical sense.
Neutral and written; 辨 normally appears inside Chinese compounds, while Japanese may show the same history through 弁.
For “argue” in modern Chinese, use 辯 in traditional writing and 辩 in simplified writing.

1Why does 辨 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
