Chinese character 厢

1443/20992

厢 means a side room or occupied compartment. 一厢情愿 turns its “one side” idea into an unshared wish.

Text symbol

What 厢 means

A room beside a building. In 厢, 广 is building-related; 相 hints at the sound.

Han-era histories use 東廂 for an east-side room. 《說文》 lacks the entry; its supplement 《說文新附》 glosses 廂 as “corridor.” By the Song dynasty, 廂 also named city districts and nearby areas.

Is 廂 the traditional form of 厢?

Yes. 廂 is the traditional Chinese form of simplified 厢.

Ming-era texts also use 廂 for boxes. In modern Chinese, 箱 usually means a storage box; 厢 means an occupied room or compartment.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 厢 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
