Chinese character for mother

In Mandarin, 媽 means “mom” or “mother.” It is familiar in family speech and often doubled as 媽媽, the everyday word for “mom” or “mama.” In family terms, 舅媽 is a maternal uncle’s wife, 姨媽 a mother’s sister, and 姑媽 a father’s sister. 女 points to a female-related meaning; 馬 is a clue to the sound.

A 2024 entry in Taiwan’s Ministry of Education dictionary of Chinese character variants says 媽 does not appear in Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary. Longkan Shoujian, a Chinese character dictionary completed in 997, records 媽 with the meaning “mother.” That documents the mother sense by 997, but does not date the character’s invention.

What changes outside Mandarin?

The referent changes with the language variety and phrase. In Taiwanese Hokkien, 媽 can mean grandmother, appear in female-deity names such as 七娘媽 and 觀音媽, or occur in 先生媽, a term for a woman with a specialist role. In Mandarin, it can also refer to an older woman or, in northern usage, a female servant.

In a Taiwanese Hokkien message, 阿媽 can mean grandmother, while 觀音媽 appears in a religious name. Follow the surrounding characters and language variety instead of assuming every 媽 means “mother.”

When does 媽 sound rude?

The surrounding words determine the tone. 媽 by itself is not a swear word. A 2017 analysis of Chinese profanity treats 他媽的 as offensive when used alone; judge the whole phrase, especially if the language variety is unfamiliar.

A lone 媽 from a friend is too little to settle whether it is a family reference, a name, or a message fragment. Check the surrounding words before reading it as an insult.
