Character 寰

寰, pronounced huán, means a vast realm: the world, universe, or human sphere. You meet it in 寰宇, 人寰, and 寰球. Its older recorded sense is a ruler's domain.

Text symbol

What 寰 means

It means a vast world, not a ring. Read it as elevated “world” language, not casual chat.

An early Chinese dictionary, the 說文, does not list 寰 in its main text as of 2024; it appears in that dictionary’s New Additions with the sense of a ruler’s domain. Later dictionaries extend it to earth, the universe, and 人寰, “the human world.”

寰宇 is world-wide or cosmic; 寰球 is the globe. Variant records preserve alternate outlines, so copy it from the palette above when a font draws it oddly.

Literary and geographic; better in compounds or elevated prose than casual standalone chat.

Do not use it as the ring character; that is 環.

Why does 寰 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
