What 岩 means
It names a large rock or cliff. Chinese uses 岩 for crags and geological rock: 岩石 is rock and 岩壁 is a rock face. Japanese says いわ on its own and ガン inside compounds. The earliest cited bare-form evidence is a stone inscription from Eastern Han, Jianhe 2. 山 plus 石 suggests a large mountain stone; older Chinese use covers steep or dangerous crags, while modern technical use covers rock material. Font variation changes style, not meaning.
Plain and descriptive; geology compounds make it technical.
For a shore or bank, use 岸, not 岩.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 岩 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
