What 峄 means
It names a mountain and related places. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, records 葛峄山 and quotes 峄阳孤桐, a phrase about a lone paulownia tree on the mountain's southern side. Later dictionary glosses also use 峄 for connected mountain ridges.
In 219 BCE, Qin Shi Huang climbed Mount Yi and had the 嶧山刻石—an inscription carved in stone to praise Qin rule—made. The next emperor, Qin Er Shi, added text in 209 BCE. The character also appears in 峄县, a county recorded from 1369–1912.
