What 庭 means
A courtyard or yard; the surrounding word decides. Japanese writes niwa, a word for a yard or garden, with 庭. In Mandarin, 庭 is read tíng in compounds such as 庭院, meaning courtyard.
家庭 means a household, while 法庭 means a court of law or courtroom. These Chinese compounds show why the garden meaning does not fit every use; translate the whole word, not this character in isolation.
Where does 庭 come from?
A recognizable ancestor appears in bronze from the late Western Zhou. Traditional character analysis treats 庭 as 广 plus 廷: 广 indicates a built setting, while 廷 contributes a related sound and court association.
Those enclosures could host ritual and government business, not only planting. In historical Japanese usage, 庭 could also name communal or legal spaces, alongside the area around a home.
庭 and 廷 are related, not interchangeable
庭 includes 广 on its left; 廷 does not. Their written forms are historically connected, but a word written with one cannot be changed to the other.
庭 is ordinary written vocabulary in Chinese and Japanese; without language context, a standalone message can be hard to read.
Do not translate every 庭 as “garden”: 家庭 means household, and 法庭 means courtroom.

1Why does 庭 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
