Chinese character 廬

廬 means a modest hut or temporary dwelling. Its Mandarin reading is lú. The old Chinese dictionary 說文解字 describes a place for seasonal lodging; later dictionaries also list field shelters, mourning huts, roadside inns, and officials' quarters.

The written form developed over time. Some bronze-inscription forms leave out 广; the later account in 說文解字 writes 廬 with the shelter component 广 and sound-bearing 盧. That is a record of the character's structure, not a securely dated first appearance. 廬 also occurs in older place names, including 廬山.

Is 廬 the same as 庐?

Yes. 庐 is the simplified Chinese form of 廬. The two forms write the same Chinese character, with the same core hut sense. Traditional-script text uses 廬; simplified-script text uses 庐.

What does 廬 mean in a message?

A bare 廬 does not identify the sender’s mood. It names a dwelling or appears inside a compound or proper name, so read the surrounding words before deciding what the sender means. In traditional writing, choosing 廬 can also mark older diction, a quotation, or a name.

A Cantonese dictionary entry from 2025 extends the hut sense to a humble home or old-fashioned study, sometimes with self-effacing or reclusive overtones. That is a register-bound use, not a universal meaning for a bare character.
