What 廾 means
It began as a two-hands sign.
廾 appears in Shang oracle-bone inscriptions and early bronze writing; oracle bones served for divination. It is an early form of 拱, a character for joining hands respectfully. In bronze and later texts, 共, with 廾 as its hand element, could mean offering, supplying, acting together, or respect; some uses later appear as 供 and 恭.

1Why does 廾 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
